The Walking Dead Season 1 DVD Overview
Zombies have been a staple of American pop-culture for a long time, but the emergence of the walking dead made the fixation a little bit stronger. 5 to 6 million viewers per night tuned in for the first 6 episodes. So it was quite a big deal. Just another example of comic book heroes come to life. Here is my review of The Walking Dead Season 1 DVD series.
The season starts off with police officer Rick Grimes and his fellow deputies getting in a shootout and Rick getting shot and injured. He gets taken to a hospital only to wake up to it being totally vacant. Who knows what was going through his mind as he wandered aimlessly through the abandoned hospital, vacant parking lot, and playgrounds. When he first encountered a zombie he was surely very confused.
The whole first season showed Rick going on a search to find his wife and son. He befriends Morgan and his son for a while and then sets out to find his family along with the origin of the virus. He starts heading for Atlanta to see if his wife and child are there without knowing they are safe with his former partner with the police Shane who rounded up survivors including them.
The Good & the Bad
- Intense, Nail-Biting Suspense
- Characters That You Really Hope Survive, Others You Don’t
- Set In A World Where Nobody Is Even Aware Of Zombies. In Fact, You Don’t Even Hear The Word “Zombie” Ever Mentioned. Far-Fetched, but the fact that nobody sees the zombie-apocalypse coming makes it more intriguing.
- Some of your favorite characters die unexpectedly, so don’t get too attached to anybody.
Who is The Walking Dead Season 1 DVD For?
The Walking Dead Season 1 is for anyone who is into action films and tv shows. As long as a bit of a gory, bloody mess doesn’t make you nauseous you would like it. It is similar to the Night Of The Living Dead films without some of the corny jokes the movies had.
You’ll experience moments that make you jump out of your seat. One of the things about most movies is the main characters always survive no matter what. That is not the case with this series. Like the Game Of Thrones show, your favorite character is just one bad step from being taken out. Except for in this case it is either by zombies or post-apocalyptic raiders.
You don’t really get to meet any of the big villains in this first season which is unfortunate, because further along in the series they become more of the focal point to the story. Did you know there was a time when the Governor and Negan were not part of The Walking Dead? It’s hard to fathom now, but they didn’t come along until later.
Just a warning: Don’t get attached to anyone in this show.

Why Is the walking dead season 1 So Captivating?
This is the first introduction to post-apocalyptic King County. Where Rick Grimes is thrown into the middle of a zombie-infested world after getting out of his hospital bed. You get to see all the struggles of the characters as they long for things to go back to the way it used to be. Knowing very well that they wouldn’t.
This show is a glimpse into what things would probably be like if a flesh-eating zombie outbreak actually happened. Struggles for food, supplies, and weapons would result in warring factions trying to get what others already have. Killing around every corner. Total chaos.
You see moments of comedy amidst the bleak circumstances with one woman claiming the thing she misses the most is her vibrator and some of the women laughing at that. Other lighter moments of note was when Carl encountered a deer out in the woods and was in awe of it. Rick sees this and can’t help but be taken up in the moment too.
That was just a moment though, then a hunter shoots the deer, the bullet goes through the deer and hits Carl. This sends Rick into a panic and he races back to the safehold to save Carl’s life. Luckily, they have a veterinarian, a horse vet I believe to get the bullet out. Things were tranquil for a second. Thanks, AMC for reminding us that this is no time to be staring at a beautiful woodland creature. Sheesh.
My Final Opinion Of Season 1
I really enjoyed the first season. It is probably my favorite one since it is the most memorable and had the greatest impression on me. The makeup and special effects of the zombies look very realistic so kudos to the makeup department and CGI guys. Creepy.
The actors were really top-notch in steering the story where it needed to go. I liked Rick the best. Andrew Lincoln, despite being British, delivered an uncanny American accent to his role as Rick Grimes, Sherrif, and later leader of his clan trying to put a stop to this walker virus.
Norman Reedus, AKA Daryl, is the bad boy with a heart of gold. He’s the reason the majority of females tune in and why tee shirts say things like” If Daryl Dies We Riot”. So don’t kill him AMC. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.
