You are missing out a lot if the cowbell isn’t added to your arsenal. Just ask The “Bruce” Dickinson and he will tell you the only cure is to have “more cowbell”. No other T-shirt says it better than this one, either.
The Blue Oyster Cult learned this on the SNL skit featuring Chris Parnell(playing Eric Bloom), Jimmy Fallon(playing Albert Bouchard), Chris Kattan(as Buck Dharma), Horatio Sanz(Joe Bouchard), and Will Ferrell(as the overzealous cowbell player).
The skit features Christopher Walken as the "Bruce" Dickinson who is one of the real great record producers of our time. Maybe not in this skit though as you'll find out.
The band is producing their billboard topper "Don't Fear The Reaper" and it all starts out fine. They are playing away smoothly and Will Ferrell's character starts in on the cowbell. You'll want to note that Will Ferrell is right behind the lead singer beating on the cowbell.
I Said More Cowbell And I Mean Really Get Into It!
Mid-song the lead singer stops the song and Bruce Dickinson comes out to see why they stopped. He explains that the cowbell is a little distracting. To this Bruce Dickinson says that he thinks they need to add in more cowbell. He even instructs Will Ferrell to really get into the role and really use the space in the studio. Will Ferrell tells the band that this is The "Bruce Dickinson" and they probably should take his advice.
Since the band was new and they didn't want to disappoint the legend they agreed. So they start again, but this time Ferrell is really letting that cowbell have it. He is even bumping into his bandmates and they decide to stop again only to have Dickinson keep coming out and saying "I still need more cowbell baby!" to their dismay.
There's Only One Prescription For This Fever...More Cowbell!
It is one of the funniest Saturday Night Skits I remember. It is up there with the Chris Farley skit where he's Matt Foley as the motivational speaker. I think this skit is great and they now have this humorous long-sleeve t-shirt for the "More Cowbell" skit that has more cowbell written proudly to show your enthusiasm for this instrument.
The colors look really good and the bolded words on it are well done. Anyone who asks what's with the More Cowbell shirt isn't a SNL fan and should be avoided. This skit can be seen in the Saturday Night Live: The Best Of Will Ferrell dvd which is full of the most hilarious Will Farrell moments.
Youtube doesn't play the whole funny performance because it could cause copyright strikes, so to get the full enjoyment you should buy this dvd. You could see if your local library has a copy of this if you want to attempt to go the free route.
